Salads are often the go-to option for a light, healthy dinner. However, according to Dr. Maximilian Schubert, medical director at Mayrlife Medical Health Resort, raw foods like salads may not be ideal at night. “Raw vegetables contain high fibre, which benefits gut health during the day but can be hard to digest in the evening,” he says. This may lead to bloating, discomfort, and disturbed sleep.
In F.X. Mayr Medicine, digestion is key to well-being. Dr. Schubert advises avoiding raw foods -including fruits, nuts, raw fish, and meat - after 4–5 p.m. Evening digestion slows down, and heavy fibre intake can strain the system.
Studies published in Food & Function, Gut, and Sleep Medicine Reviews support these findings, linking poor digestion of raw food in the evening to disrupted sleep.
Better options? Go for boiled or steamed vegetables, soups, or light cooked meals to support healthy digestion and restful sleep.
