World Autism Awareness Day, observed every year on April 2, aims to spread awareness and promote acceptance of autism, a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts social interaction, communication, and behavior. Contrary to common misconceptions, autism is not a disease but a spectrum of diverse abilities and challenges, making every individual unique.
Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in supporting individuals with autism. It can be identified in children as early as 18 months through a combination of direct assessments and caregiver reports. Key signs include difficulty in verbal and non-verbal communication, reduced eye contact, challenges in social engagement, and heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli like sound or touch. Some children may speak fluently, while others might use visual aids or non-verbal cues to communicate.
AUTISM often arises from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors include a family history of autism, older parental age, pregnancy complications, and short intervals between pregnancies. Understanding these factors helps in early detection and better support.
Despite the challenges, children with autism can lead fulfilling lives with the right guidance and a supportive environment. Dr. Shorouq Motwani, a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, emphasizes that autism should not be seen as a disability but rather a unique way of experiencing the world. She advocates for early intervention and acceptance to enable autistic individuals to thrive.
Society’s role is crucial in breaking stereotypes and promoting inclusivity. By fostering understanding and offering adequate support, we can ensure that individuals with autism are valued, respected, and empowered to live meaningful lives.
