The Janata Dal (United) faces internal turmoil as five senior leaders, including Nadeem Akhtar, resign in protest against the party's support for the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill. With the Bihar assembly elections looming, the resignations deal a significant blow to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's leadership and secular image.
Raju Nayyar condemned the bill as a “black law,” accusing the JD(U) of abandoning Muslim interests. Tabrez Hasan echoed the sentiment, stating that Nitish Kumar's stance had shattered the community's trust.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board had urged secular parties to oppose the bill, citing threats to religious freedom. Despite the opposition's strong criticism, the Rajya Sabha passed the bill with 128 votes in favour.
The growing dissent within JD(U) now threatens its cohesion and electoral prospects, raising questions about its future alliances and ideological direction.
