At the Rising Bharat 2025 event, political scientist Max Abrahms emphasized India's growing strategic importance to the United States, particularly as a counterweight to China's influence in the Indo-Pacific. He highlighted how India’s economic and military rise has made it an essential ally in the U.S.'s long-term geopolitical calculus.
Abrahms pointed to evolving global dynamics, including the rise of economic nationalism, particularly under former U.S. President Donald Trump. Tariffs, protectionism, and skepticism toward multilateralism have shaped a more fragmented global economy. He argued that these changes push nations like India to assert greater independence and take a leading role in regional and global affairs.
India’s increasing alignment with the West, especially through defense and trade partnerships, reflects this shift. Abrahms underlined India’s capacity to shape the balance of power in Asia, particularly through frameworks like the Quad (comprising the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia), which he sees as critical to maintaining regional stability and freedom of navigation.
The scholar also addressed how India’s position in the emerging world order is evolving—from a developing economy to a key voice in global governance. He encouraged continued collaboration between democratic nations, especially amid global disruptions, to uphold economic growth, security, and shared values.
