You've probably heard of “blue balls" — often joked about but rarely understood. According to Dr. Suri Raju V, senior consultant urologist at Regal Super Speciality Hospital, it's a real, though temporary, condition medically known as epididymal hypertension. It occurs when sexual arousal isn't followed by orgasm, leading to increased blood flow and pressure in the testicles.
Though uncomfortable, blue balls aren't dangerous and usually resolve on their own within hours. However, persistent or intense pain may point to issues like infection or testicular torsion, which require medical attention.
Relief methods include ejaculation, physical activity, distraction, cold compresses, or pain relievers like ibuprofen. Exercise can help redirect blood flow, while cold packs reduce swelling.
Importantly, blue balls are common—especially in younger men—but should never be used to coerce sexual activity. Consent is always non-negotiable.
