In a decisive move, South Calcutta Law College has expelled three students accused in the recent gang rape of a fellow student, following mounting public outrage and internal investigation. The incident, which sent shockwaves through the academic and legal communities, has sparked demands for stricter action and legal accountability.
Among those implicated is Monojit Mishra, a practising criminal lawyer and former student of the college. Authorities have stated that they are initiating proceedings to request cancellation of his Bar Council membership, citing the gravity of the allegations and the ethical breach involved.
The college issued a statement saying it has "zero tolerance for such heinous crimes" and is committed to maintaining a safe and just environment for all students.
Police investigations into the case are ongoing, and the accused are facing charges under multiple sections of the IPC. Meanwhile, student groups and activists are demanding systemic reforms in how educational institutions handle sexual violence allegations.
