7 reasons why citrus fruits are crucial for boosting winter immunity

Dietician Surabhi Sharma, a Clinical Nutritionist at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Gurugram, highlights that citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage. Vitamin C also stimulates the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting off infections and maintaining a strong immune response. Additionally, citrus fruits contain flavonoids and other antioxidants that safeguard immune cells from damage caused by free radicals, further supporting immune function.

 

The anti-inflammatory properties of citrus fruits, driven by flavonoids and vitamin C, help reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune response. Vitamin C also aids in collagen production, vital for wound healing and maintaining the skin and mucous membranes, the body’s first defense line against pathogens. Citrus fruits are also a good source of dietary fiber, which promotes gut health. Since the gut plays a key role in immunity, maintaining its health is essential for a strong immune system.

 

Citrus fruits are also hydrating due to their high water content, which helps flush out toxins and supports immune function. Additionally, the citric acid in citrus fruits stimulates liver enzymes that aid in detoxification, further boosting immune health.
