In Maur Khurd village, Bathinda district (Punjab), 30-year-old farmer Ramandeep Singh has turned a tech-driven idea into a thriving agricultural venture by growing aeroponic potato seeds — roots suspended in air with nutrients instead of soil. In his very first year of production, Ramandeep achieved turnover exceeding ₹1 crore, a remarkable milestone in a region traditionally dependent on wheat and paddy cultivation.
Aeroponics allows precise control over water, nutrients, temperature and disease, producing high-quality, genetically pure and virus-free seed potatoes that are crucial for commercial farming across India. Using just a 2.5-kanal plot (less than one-third of an acre) and modern greenhouses, nutrient misters and cold storage, Ramandeep’s facility can generate millions of mini-tubers each season — the foundational stock for the country’s potato production chain.
With a BSc in Agriculture from Punjab Agricultural University and ongoing MSc studies in Plant Breeding, Ramandeep combined scientific training with innovation, shifting away from conventional crops to capture a high-value niche. His success highlights how technology-led farming models can boost incomes even on small landholdings, offering a scalable alternative to traditional agriculture.
As India faces pressure from rising input costs and stagnant farm incomes, this aeroponic success story underscores the potential of modern cultivation techniques to deliver economic resilience and higher earnings for enterprising farmers.
