Big news, Android fans! Google just confirmed that lock screen widgets are finally coming to Android 16 phones later this year. If you've been eyeing the Pixel Tablet's lock screen widgets with envy, your wait is almost over-soon, your phone will get the same glow-up!
What's the deal?
Right now, Android phones don't let you slap widgets onto your lock screen. But with Android 16, that's changing.
All widgets will support the lock screen by default (unless app developers opt out), meaning you'll be able to check the weather, control your music, or peek at your to-do list without unlocking your phone. Some actions like launching an app, will still require a PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock.
When is it dropping?
Android 16 is expected to launch in June, with lock screen widgets rolling out in the first quarterly update after release, so expect them by late summer. The feature will also be added to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), meaning it won't be Pixel-exclusive.
Early access reveals that widgets currently only appear in screensaver mode when charging, but manufacturers can customize how they work. Plus, since phone screens are smaller, widgets will stack vertically, so you’ll swipe to see them all.
What's next?
Android just keeps getting more customizable. Whether you're checking the weather or jamming to your playlist, your lock screen is about to get a major upgrade!
