Months after Sheikh Hasina’s removal as Bangladesh's Prime Minister, textbooks in primary and secondary schools will remove content related to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of the country. This change will affect both Bangla and English textbooks, with six texts and prose about Rahman being eliminated from English textbooks for classes six to nine. Additionally, three proses and poems about Bangabandhu will be removed from the Bangla textbooks for classes six and seven.
The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) will include content about the student-led mass uprising in both Bangla and English textbooks for classes five to nine. Apart from Rahman, content related to other prominent figures like Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and Titumir will also be removed, particularly in the class six Bangla textbook.
NCTB Chairman Prof. AKM Reazul Hassan explained that the removal of "exaggerated content" about Mujibur Rahman reflects the view that the country was shaped by many leaders, not just one. He mentioned leaders such as Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Maulana Bhashani, and Ziaur Rahman, whose contributions should also be recognized. Some chapters about Mujibur Rahman, including those on the 1969 mass uprising, the 1970 election, and his 1971 March 7 speech, will remain.
This move follows recent actions to remove Rahman’s image from currency notes and public offices. Rahman’s legacy faced criticism during protests in July, which led to the removal of his portrait from various locations and attacks on his statues and murals.
