A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Afghanistan on Saturday afternoon, sending tremors across Pakistan and northern India. The National Center for Seismology reported that the quake occurred at 12:17 PM IST at a depth of 130 km, with its epicentre near latitude 36.10°N and longitude 71.20°E. Strong tremors were felt in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi-NCR, and cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar in Pakistan.

Although no damage was immediately reported, the event stirred panic in quake-prone areas like Delhi, which sits in seismic zone 4, a high-risk zone. Earlier the same day, a magnitude 2.9 quake struck Assam’s Nagaon, further highlighting India’s tectonic vulnerability.

Experts warn that with over 75% of Delhi's buildings violating safety norms, structural preparedness is crucial. As fault lines like the Mathura and Sohna persist, and Himalayan plate movement builds pressure, residents are urged to stay informed and ready.
