Chhattisgarh’s forests are witnessing a major wildlife comeback: tiger numbers have increased from 17 in 2022 to 35 by April 2025. This growth was highlighted in a recent State Wildlife Welfare Board review.
Central to this recovery is the strengthening of Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, which now hosts the highest tiger population in the state. Other protected areas such as Udanti–Sitanadi and Guru Ghasidas Tamor Pingla are earmarked for tiger reintroduction in partnership with Madhya Pradesh, to support genetic diversity.
The conservation push isn’t just about big cats. Efforts include habitat enhancement (water pipelines, core forest infrastructure), supporting migratory birds in Jashpur’s Neemgaon region, and launching community-oriented projects like the ‘Myna Mitra’ initiative to monitor hill mynas and nesting health. Local villages and forest department teams collaborate in anti-poaching patrols, camera traps, and prey-density surveys.
