f you’re struggling with restless nights, your down comforter might be to blame. According to Ashley Mason, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist specializing in insomnia, heavy duvets can cause overheating, which disrupts your natural sleep cycle. Speaking on The Peter Attia Drive podcast, Mason revealed that many people unknowingly suffer from night sweats due to their bedding choice.
The body’s temperature regulation follows a circadian rhythm—it stays warm during the day and cools down at night to promote restful sleep. However, down comforters trap heat, making your body think it’s still daytime. This imbalance can lead to frequent wake-ups, restlessness, and reduced sleep quality. A study published in the Journal of Physical Anthropology confirms that excessive warmth, especially in humid conditions, decreases REM sleep and increases wakefulness.
Mason suggests a simple fix: replace your down comforter with two or three breathable cotton blankets. This allows for better airflow and lets you adjust layers based on comfort. Unlike thick duvets, cotton doesn’t trap excessive heat, helping your body maintain an optimal sleeping temperature.
She also recommends a small trick for those who experience cold feet: rolling up a duvet at the foot of the bed. This keeps your feet warm without overheating your entire body.
Sometimes, better sleep doesn’t require drastic lifestyle changes—just a small adjustment like switching to breathable bedding can lead to significant improvements in sleep quality and overall well-being.
