Bilal Ahmed Teli, 22, from Mangaluru, managed to enter IIT‑Bombay on May 27 under the guise of attending a one‑day academic programme. Instead of leaving afterward, he stayed on campus for nearly three weeks. During the day, he sat in on lectures - including in artificial intelligence and robotics - and at night, he found shelter in unused hostel spaces and sofas in common areas .
Remarkably, Teli maintained a near‑invisible digital presence by using 21 different email IDs and multiple phone numbers, even opting for calling apps to avoid detection . He departed briefly around June 7, returning on June 10, and was finally spotted on June 17 by a staff member in lecture hall LH‑101, prompting his detention and transfer to Powai police .
Following the FIR filed on June 21, he was arrested and remanded to police custody the next day. He now faces charges of cheating, forgery, criminal trespass, and breach of trust, with the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Crime Intelligence Unit leading the ongoing investigation . Authorities are reviewing IIT‑Bombay’s security protocols to prevent future breaches.
