Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on the contentious decision to exclude Sanju Samson from India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Despite discussions favoring Samson's inclusion, the selectors chose Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul as the team’s wicketkeeping options, a decision that sparked considerable debate and criticism.
Gavaskar, speaking to India Today, admitted that leaving Samson out was a difficult call, especially given his consistent performance in ODIs. Samson has scored 510 runs in just 16 matches, boasting an average of 56.66 and a strike rate of 99.60, with one century and three half-centuries.
“It’s tough because Samson has been scoring hundreds of runs, and his batting abilities are unquestionable,” Gavaskar said. However, he justified the selectors' preference for Pant, citing his left-handed batting and superior wicketkeeping skills. "Pant is a game-changer and probably a better wicketkeeper, even if Samson might be the better batter," Gavaskar added.
The veteran also encouraged Samson to stay motivated despite the setback. “All Indian cricket lovers sympathize with him for what he has achieved,” he remarked, emphasizing that Samson’s journey is far from over.
Samson's sporadic appearances since his ODI debut reflect the challenges he faces in securing a consistent spot in the team, despite his impressive stats and potential to excel in the 50-over format.
