Handbags have transitioned from functional carriers to iconic fashion statements that reflect personal style, social status, and evolving cultural trends. Once a necessity for carrying essentials, they now symbolize individuality and aspiration. Mohit Jain, founder of Miraggio, believes handbags have evolved alongside women's changing roles, transforming into symbols of empowerment and ambition.
Rohit Agarwal of Urban Space highlights how handbags now serve as an extension of one’s personality—whether minimalist, adventurous, or indulgent. Luxury brands have fueled this shift, turning handbags into aspirational collectibles. Filmmaker Karan Johar, known for his love of statement pieces, exemplifies this transformation with his collection of high-end, conversation-starting designer bags. His recent ₹18 lakh Hermès Shark Bag, a quirky and bold fashion choice, perfectly represents how handbags can be both a status symbol and a form of artistic expression.
Seema Gandhi, founder of Kacko Lifestyle, emphasizes the significant role of socioeconomic and cultural influences in shaping handbag trends. “Handbags started as utilitarian tools, with the sole purpose of carrying items. The medieval era saw embroidery become a prominent craft, while the Industrial Revolution made handbags more portable and travel-friendly,” she explains. She adds that the 20th century marked a turning point, with leading brands prioritizing exclusivity, functionality, and design. Looking ahead, she believes sustainability will be the future of handbags, as consumers demand eco-friendly materials and ethical production.
From status symbols to sustainability statements, handbags continue to redefine modern fashion and self-expression.
