The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for actor-musician Diljit Dosanjh, cementing his status as a global star. From appearances on international talk shows and high-profile musical collaborations to the immense success of his national and international concerts, and his performance in Amar Singh Chamkila, it was undoubtedly a landmark year for the versatile artist. However, alongside his triumphs came controversies, particularly advisories targeting his songs that reference alcohol and violence.
Diljit faced these directives during various concerts and complied by altering his lyrics. Yet, he did not shy away from addressing the issue, stating, “If all states ban liquor consumption, I will never sing a song about alcohol in my entire life.” His remarks sparked discussions, and popular rapper Honey Singh voiced his support. In an interview with India Today, Honey Singh criticized the double standards of states that issue such advisories while profiting from liquor sales.
“They aren’t shutting down liquor stores. Let them make it a dry state, make India a dry country. Then we can have a conversation,” Honey asserted. Despite the irony, given his earlier songs often referenced alcohol, Honey noted that he has since quit drinking and expressed willingness to support a campaign for an alcohol-free India. With humor, he suggested creating songs about traditional drinks like lassi or jal jeera instead.
Reflecting on his hit “Char Bottle Vodka,” Honey remarked that if forced to reword it, the track would end up being an instrumental. He also highlighted how alcohol references are deeply ingrained in cultural celebrations across India, not just in Punjab.
Meanwhile, Diljit Dosanjh’s highly successful Dil-luminati tour is set to conclude with a grand concert in Ludhiana on New Year’s Eve, closing a transformative year for the star.
