In a concerning incident, a portion of the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Kottayam, Kerala, collapsed on Thursday, leaving two individuals injured. According to officials, both victims sustained non-serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital's casualty department.
Health Minister Veena George and Cooperation Minister V N Vasavan swiftly visited the site after the collapse. Authorities confirmed that the affected section was an unused toilet area in a three-storey building that also housed three active wards.
As a safety measure, around 100 patients were relocated from the surrounding areas to prevent any further harm. The structural failure involved a part of the bathroom complex, raising concerns about the integrity of older, unused infrastructure in government medical facilities.
Police and fire personnel are conducting search operations to ensure that no individuals are trapped beneath the debris. The incident has sparked discussions about urgent infrastructure audits and maintenance at public hospitals across the state.
