Every Indian gets the same 24 hours but how those hours are spent tells a deeper story about work, gender, and priorities.
According to the latest Time Use Survey 2024 by the NSO, Indians spend nearly half their day — around 708 minutes — on self-care activities like sleeping, eating, and personal hygiene.
Work-related activities show a sharp gender divide: men spend 287 minutes daily on paid work, while women only spend 71 minutes. However, women do the heavy lifting at home, clocking 236 minutes on unpaid domestic work, compared to just 24 minutes for men.
Other parts of the day go toward learning (89 mins), caregiving (30 mins), socializing and religious activities (125 mins), and leisure or media consumption (159 mins).
The data reveals a clear picture: while the clock is equal, time isn't. Women's time is stretched thin across unpaid and invisible work, while men dominate in formal employment.
So, how do you spend your 24 hours?
