Doctors are raising red flags about a rising epidemic: fatty liver disease in young, lean-looking people. You might have a flat stomach - but your liver could be in trouble.
Once thought to affect only the obese or heavy drinkers, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now being diagnosed in gym-goers, college students, and young professionals who look "fit."
According to Dr. Pavan Reddy Thondapu, these are "skinny fat" individuals - thin on the outside, but carrying dangerous visceral fat around the liver.
The cause? A perfect storm of poor lifestyle habits - processed food, sugary drinks, skipping breakfast, late-night eating, minimal sleep, and hours of sitting.
And no, having abs doesn’t mean you're safe.
"BMI is outdated," says Dr. Suresh Raghavaiah. "It doesn’t reveal what’s happening inside."
The early stages of fatty liver often show zero symptoms. By the time you feel tired or bloated, the damage may already be done.
Add a family history of diabetes, thyroid issues, or PCOS, and the risks multiply - even at a healthy weight.
The good news? It’s reversible.
Start with small steps: eat clean, move more, cut alcohol, and fix your sleep schedule.
Because real health isn't just about looking fit - it’s about what’s going on beneath the surface.
