Researchers at IIT Bombay have introduced a revolutionary needle-free syringe that ensures painless, safe, and effective drug delivery. This new device eliminates the need for sharp needles by using high-energy shock waves to penetrate the skin. The innovative approach causes less damage, reduces inflammation, and lowers the risk of infections, making it a promising alternative to traditional syringes.
Developed by the Department of Aerospace Engineering, the syringe features a carefully designed nozzle with a tiny 125 µm opening. This design strikes a balance between minimizing pain and ensuring the mechanical strength needed for rapid medication delivery. By precisely controlling the pressure, the device guarantees comfort and safety during injections while avoiding unnecessary tissue trauma.
In tests, the shock syringe performed just as well as regular needles for delivering anesthetics, with effects beginning 3–5 minutes after injection and lasting 20–30 minutes. It proved particularly effective for slow-releasing drugs like Terbinafine, delivering them deeper into the skin. When tested with insulin on diabetic rats, the syringe not only lowered blood sugar levels more effectively but also maintained the reduction for longer durations.
It also addresses the needs of diabetic patients requiring regular insulin injections, providing a painless, effective, and long-lasting alternative. With its cost-efficiency and user-friendly design, this innovation has the potential to revolutionize drug administration for millions worldwide.
