U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that India has agreed to remove all tariffs on American goods, claiming it as a major personal achievement and a breakthrough in U.S.-India trade relations.
Trump emphasized that such a concession would not have been made for anyone else, suggesting this move could dramatically improve access for U.S. products in the Indian market, which has often faced criticism for high tariff barriers.
While India has yet to officially confirm the development, the announcement signals a possible resolution to a long-standing point of contention between the two countries.
In a separate trade development, India and the United Kingdom concluded a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on the same day.
This deal aims to eliminate tariffs on a wide range of goods and services, enhancing trade and economic collaboration between the two nations.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed the FTA in a phone call, praising its potential to boost investment, job creation, and innovation.
Modi called the agreement a historic milestone and expressed optimism about deeper bilateral ties and Starmer's upcoming visit to India.
