In a historic move, India has significantly reduced water flow to Pakistan by closing sluice gates at the Baglihar dam on the Chenab river, cutting downstream flow by up to 90%. Simultaneously, plans are underway to halt runoff from the Kishanganga project on the Jhelum river. These actions follow India's suspension of the six-decade-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), citing national interest after the Pahalgam terror attack.
India is leveraging its full rights over the Indus system to boost domestic water supply and hydropower generation. Major hydel projects- Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar, and Ratle with a combined capacity of 3,014 MW, are advancing rapidly in Jammu and Kashmir.
The projects aim to harness underutilized potential, especially in the Chenab basin. Pakistan has voiced objections, but India remains steadfast, with engineers deployed to expedite developments and reinforce its control over shared river waters.
