On Friday, March 21, 2025, Delhi Police arrested Hazrat Parwana, a third-year Sanskrit student at Jamia Millia Islamia and a leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) student wing.
The arrest was in connection with a scuffle that occurred during Diwali in October 2024, allegedly caused by ABVP-YUVA Jamia, a Hindu right-wing group. Hazrat was arrested at Gate No. 18 of the university after attending an iftar gathering and was taken to Jamia Nagar Police Station.
His supporters say he was mistreated and beaten before being moved to Tihar Jail the next morning.
Before his arrest, Hazrat's family and legal team had filed for anticipatory bail, but it was rejected initially due to logistical issues. However, Hazrat was released late on March 22 after securing bail from a Delhi court.
The incident in question happened on October 22, 2024, during a rangoli-making event organized by the RSS-backed ABVP. Outsiders, including BJP leaders and RSS members, entered the campus, causing a disturbance.
They raised slogans like "Jai Shree Ram" and lit firecrackers while prayers were being held, provoking Jamia students. This led to a scuffle. An FIR was filed, accusing Hazrat and others of disrupting the event.
However, only Muslim students, including Hazrat, were named in the complaint.
The Jamia administration and police have faced criticism for targeting Hazrat and failing to take action against those responsible for the violence.
