Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay has removed Justice Yashwant Varma from judicial work with immediate effect after a three-member Supreme Court inquiry panel was formed to probe allegations regarding a large sum of cash reportedly found at his residence.
The controversy erupted after a fire at Justice Varma's official residence on March 14, during which first responders allegedly discovered stacks of charred cash. Justice Varma was in Bhopal at the time. Following this, CJI Sanjiv Khanna recommended his transfer to the Allahabad High Court, but many legal experts called for a formal investigation instead.
The case has triggered debates within judicial and political circles, with the Allahabad High Court Bar Association opposing his transfer and Rajya Sabha discussing judicial accountability. The controversy may also revive talks on the scrapped National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC).
