India is grappling with a burgeoning health crisis fueled by the widespread consumption of ultra-processed foods, commonly referred to as HFSS (high in fat, salt, and sugar) items. These factory-made, energy-dense products—ranging from chocolates and sugary treats to salty snacks, beverages, instant noodles, and ready-to-eat meals—have transitioned from occasional indulgences to daily staples, largely due to their easy availability on store shelves and delivery apps.
The addictive nature of these foods, laden with additives like preservatives, sweeteners, and emulsifiers, has raised significant health concerns. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Supreme Court, on April 9, mandated the central government to strengthen labeling on packaged foods within three months. This directive aims to enhance public awareness about food intake and promote informed dietary choices.
The market for ultra-processed foods in India has seen a substantial surge, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% since 2019. Valued at ₹2.58 lakh crore in 2024, it is projected to escalate to ₹3.98 lakh crore by 2029, according to market research firm Euromonitor.
Health experts warn that the unchecked consumption of these foods is contributing to a rise in lifestyle-related diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular ailments.
