Imagine casually stepping out of an e-rickshaw, only to find your family and neighbors mourning YOU. That'’s exactly what happened to Khunti Guru, a resident of Prayagraj, who was presumed dead after the tragic Mahakumbh Mela stampede on January 29.
The chaos at the Mela had left 30 dead and 60 injured. When Guru didn't return home after the incident, his loved ones assumed the worst. Days of searching led nowhere, and eventually, his family performed his 'tehrvi', a Hindu ritual held on the 13th day after someone's passing.
But plot twist- Guru wasn't dead. He was just… vibing.
Turns out, he had lost track of time after spending days with sadhus, smoking chillums, and soaking in the spiritual energy of the Mela. Completely unaware of the grief back home, he finally returned nearly two weeks later, only to be greeted with a crowd that had already moved on, to honouring his 'spirit'.
His entrance was nothing short of cinematic. As he stepped out of the rickshaw, he was met with wide-eyed stares. "What are you all up to?" he asked with a smile, leaving everyone speechless.
Social worker Abhai Awasthi recalled that Guru had set out on January 28 for a holy dip at Sangam on Mauni Amavasya. But when the stampede hit the next morning and he was nowhere to be found, people assumed the worst. With no sign of him for days, his family followed tradition and held his last rites.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government addressed the tragedy, with CM Yogi Adityanath admitting that the administration was overwhelmed by the massive crowds surging toward the Sangam Nose for the auspicious occasion.
