The Delhi government has revised its free bus travel scheme for women, limiting the benefit to city residents only. The move aims to ensure that only eligible women from Delhi can access the facility.
To implement this change, the transport department will introduce a 'lifetime' smart card, which will serve as proof of eligibility. Women will need to provide valid Delhi residency documents to obtain the card.
Once issued, the smart card will allow free travel on all Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses.
Officials say the decision will help streamline the scheme, curb misuse, and ensure Delhi taxpayers' money benefits local residents. Introduced in 2019, the scheme has significantly boosted women's access to public transport.
While many support the change, saying it targets subsidies more effectively, critics argue it may impact women commuting from nearby states for work or education.
The transport department is expected to release detailed guidelines soon, including the application process for the smart card.
