Nirmala Sitharaman calls patriarchy an excuse for inefficiency

During the event, a student expressed concerns about women lacking family support and being "pushed into a patriarchal world." In response, Sitharaman questioned the validity of patriarchy as a barrier, stating, "What’s patriarchy ya? If you are able to stand up and speak for yourself logically, which is that patriarchy which is going to say shut up, sit down. Impossible. Not certainly in a country like India."

She cited historical figures such as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, freedom fighters Aruna Asaf Ali and Sarojini Naidu, emphasizing that patriarchy did not hinder their achievements. Sitharaman urged young minds not to be swayed by terms like patriarchy, suggesting that attributing failures to such concepts is a way to mask personal inefficiencies. She highlighted the accomplishments of women scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), noting that "women are sending such wonderful satellites, and rockets and spaceships... Which patriarchy stopped these scientists?"

While acknowledging the need for more facilities and support for women, Sitharaman underscored the importance of family as a source of comfort and security. She pointed out that many women in other countries feel insecure due to the absence of familial support. The Finance Minister also criticized the prevalence of Leftist jargon in India, stating that such narratives persist because they are not adequately challenged. She called for intellectual engagement to counter these narratives with substantial answers.

Sitharaman's remarks have sparked discussions on the relevance of patriarchy in contemporary society and the factors influencing women's empowerment in India.
