Founded in 2017 by Navkaran Singh Bagga, Akvo was born from a childhood spent witnessing the stark inequality of water access in Kolkata. Recognizing that traditional sources like borewells and tankers are increasingly unreliable and ecologically damaging, Bagga developed a technology that bypasses the need for groundwater or piped infrastructure entirely. Akvo’s Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) work by mimicking the natural process of rain: pulling humid air into the machine, condensing it into water, and then putting it through a rigorous multi-stage purification and mineralization process to ensure it is both safe and healthy for consumption.
The startup’s "Purpose with Profit" model has proven highly scalable:
• Global Footprint: Akvo has installed over 2,000 systems globally, spanning 15 countries and serving diverse clients from individual households to large-scale industrial factories.
• Environmental Impact: By generating water on-site, Akvo significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with water tankers and eliminates the need for single-use plastic bottles.
• Economic Viability: The systems allow clients to control their own water supply, often at a lower long-term cost than traditional purchasing methods, while generating a sustainable revenue stream for the company through sales and maintenance.
As global water stress reaches critical levels, Akvo stands as a prime example of how deep-tech innovation can be leveraged to create a circular, decentralized water economy. Bagga’s vision is to make "water from air" a standard utility, ensuring that clean drinking water is a guaranteed right rather than a seasonal luxury.
