Rabindranath Tagore, born on May 7, 1861, remains a towering figure in literature, music, and art. Growing up in Kolkata's famed Jorasanko Thakurbari, he displayed prodigious talent from an early age. Tagore made history in 1913 by becoming the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, solidifying his place on the global stage. His birthday is celebrated according to the bengali calender as "pochishe boishakh" which means the 25th day of the month of boishakh which falls on 9th May 2025.
His profound influence is felt across borders, he authored the national anthems of India (Jana Gana Mana), Bangladesh (Amar Shonar Bangla), and influenced Sri Lanka's anthem as well. His compositions, Rabindra Sangeet, continue to captivate generations.
Every year, his birth anniversary is celebrated with immense fervour, especially in West Bengal. Cultural programs, poetry recitations, dance dramas, and musical performances honour his artistic legacy. Schools, colleges, and cultural institutions nationwide and abroad participate, reaffirming Tagore's enduring impact on literature, philosophy, and humanism. His works remain a bridge between tradition and timeless universality.
