Kolkata Police report that the accused in the IIM Calcutta rape case admitted to purchasing sleeping pills from a pharmacy and spiking cold drinks and water consumed by the woman before the incident on campus, officials revealed early July 14 .
According to a senior officer, the accused “could not clarify what the real intention was” behind drugging her, despite acknowledging he gave her counsel under the pretext of a counselling session in a hostel room . Circumstantial evidence suggests she subsequently entered the hostel room and was allegedly raped .
Police also said the accused called a friend immediately after committing the act and narrated the crime while loitering in the verandah in front of the room .
Investigators are probing discrepancies in statements, including the victim’s claimed credentials as a psychologist and her family’s inconsistent testimony, along with possible external pressure or financial motives .
A nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and the accused is in custody till July 19 .
