For the past four months, 65-year-old Pakistani national Nadir Munir Khan has been living inside Mumbai's Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg police station, awaiting deportation. Khan, a cloth merchant from Karachi, entered India illegally after a series of misfortunes left him stranded without documents.
Arrested in April 2024 near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus for suspicious movement, Khan admitted to being a Pakistani citizen but lacked a visa or passport. He was sentenced to six months in jail under the Foreigners Act and Passport Act and completed his term in October 2024. However, with no confirmation from Pakistani authorities regarding his deportation, he remains confined to the police station, forbidden from stepping outside.
Khan claims he traveled to Nepal for business in 2023 but was cheated, assaulted, and robbed of his passport. Unable to return home, he crossed into India illegally through Uttar Pradesh. Now, Mumbai police are coordinating with India's Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan's government, but the wait for a resolution continues.
Until then, Khan remains a man without a country—living inside a police station, uncertain of his fate.
