Deepavali brings joy, colours, and treats — but for children with asthma or eczema, the season can also introduce hidden allergy risks. Smoke from fireworks releases sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter that irritate airways, trigger wheezing, coughing, and worsen respiratory issues. Meanwhile, dusty decorations, rangoli powders, old lights, and fragranced candles or incense can introduce allergens into indoor air. Food-wise, sweets laden with nuts, dairy, artificial colours, or fragrances may provoke skin rashes or digestive allergy reactions.
To keep celebrations safe, limit children’s exposure to outdoor smoke (especially during peak fireworks), use air purifiers indoors, and ensure windows are closed. Opt for hypoallergenic rangoli powders and clean decorations well before use. Check ingredient lists and offer allergy-safe snacks. Keep rescue inhalers and moisturisers handy and monitor for symptoms like shortness of breath or itchy rashes. With these preventive steps, families can enjoy a safer, more inclusive Deepavali — letting kids partake without undue risk.
