Long study sessions, hours in front of screens, and constant focus on close-up work can strain the eyes. To combat this, the 20-20-20 rule for students: every 20 minutes, pause and look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple practice helps relax eye muscles and reduces digital eye strain, a condition common among those who spend extended periods using laptops, tablets, or phones. Along with preventing discomfort, the rule can also reduce headaches, sharpen focus, and help keep the eyes feeling fresh.
Putting the rule into action is easy: set timers or reminders, gaze out a window or at a distant object in the room, and remember to blink often so eyes stay moist. Incorporating it into daily study habits - especially while reading, coding, or working online - can make a big difference in long-term eye health. The payoff? Eyes that feel less tired, sharper concentration, and more comfortable screen time.
