US President Donald Trump recently shared his nuanced perspective on the H-1B visa program during a press conference at the White House. While he praised the initiative for allowing highly skilled professionals to contribute to industries such as technology and hospitality, Trump also underscored the need for stringent immigration policies.
“I like both sides of the argument, but I welcome competent people coming into the country,” Trump said. Highlighting the value of skilled professionals, including engineers and hospitality experts, he argued that their contributions bolster businesses and drive economic growth.
However, Trump's position on immigration took a controversial turn with a radical executive order stripping birthright citizenship from children born to non-citizen parents, including H-1B visa holders. The order, effective February 20, declares that unless at least one parent is a US citizen or green card holder, children born in the country will not automatically gain citizenship.
Titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” the decision has sparked intense debates. Critics argue it undermines constitutional principles and creates social and legal challenges for immigrant families. Supporters, however, view it as a necessary step to curb illegal immigration and preserve resources for American citizens.
The move has divided Trump's own support base. While industry leaders like Tesla's Elon Musk endorse the H-1B program, others believe it displaces American workers. Trump's dual stance on skilled immigration and birthright citizenship reflects the ongoing tension between economic growth and restrictive immigration policies.
