Today, two powerful earthquakes struck Myanmar and Thailand, with tremors also being felt in India’s northeastern states, particularly Manipur and Meghalaya. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Manipur, the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.2, occurred around 11:50 am, followed by a second quake measuring 7.0 at approximately 12:02 pm. The strong tremors were powerful enough to be felt in Indian territories, leading to concern among residents.
In Manipur, locals reported feeling the first quake distinctly, as water in ponds began shaking. A resident from Kangjabi Leirak Nagamapal in Imphal Town mentioned noticing the water in their pond moving as the tremors struck. In Imphal’s Rupmahal tank area, people rushed out of their homes after sensing the initial shock. Similar mild tremors were also reported from parts of Meghalaya, though no immediate damage has been reported from either state.
Despite the magnitude of the quakes, Manipur, which shares an international border of over 390 km with Myanmar, reported no damage or casualties as of the latest updates. Authorities remain vigilant and continue to monitor the situation closely.
The epicenter of both earthquakes was near Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, with the impact spreading across the region. Officials are on alert for potential aftershocks, and emergency response teams are assessing the affected areas. Further information will be provided as the situation develops.
