"Digital rape" is a term that can mean two very different things, depending on the context.
The first and legally recognized meaning refers to a physical sexual assault where a person is penetrated with fingers or toes (called "digits") without their consent.
This is a serious crime in many countries, including India, where it is recognized under IPC Sections 375 and 376. Victims can face deep trauma—physically and emotionally and it affects all genders.
The term gained wider recognition after the 2012 Nirbhaya case led to legal reforms in India.
The second, more modern meaning refers to virtual or digital sexual violence in online spaces like virtual reality platforms, games, and social media.
This includes unwanted sexual advances, harassment, or even simulated sexual assaults. Though this doesn't involve physical contact, it can cause serious emotional harm, including anxiety and depression. Laws around this type of assault are still developing.
In both cases, the impact on victims is real. Whether physical or virtual, digital rape is a violation that demands awareness, sensitivity, and stronger legal action.
