While lemon is often praised for its skincare benefits and used in home remedies to brighten the complexion, dermatologists caution against applying it directly to the face. Dr. Yugal Rajput, a dermatologist at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, explains that although lemon is rich in vitamin C and citric acid, which help reduce blemishes and boost skin radiance, its high acidity poses a serious risk. The fruit’s low pH level can lead to skin irritation, redness, rashes, and even allergic reactions, especially in those with sensitive or compromised skin conditions like acne, eczema, or dermatitis.
Lemon’s acidic nature can strip the skin’s natural barrier, causing damage rather than healing. A major concern is phytophotodermatitis—a condition where lemon juice on the skin reacts with sunlight, potentially leading to burns or blisters. Hence, exposure to sunlight after using lemon topically can amplify its harmful effects.
Dr. Rajput advises that if individuals still wish to use lemon in their skincare routines, it should always be diluted—preferably with soothing agents like honey or curd—and tested on a small patch of skin beforehand. This ensures the skin doesn’t react negatively. While lemon is a common ingredient in many cosmetic products, those formulations are usually professionally balanced to reduce its harsh effects.
In conclusion, although lemon may offer some benefits, using it raw and undiluted on the face is not recommended by experts. Safe usage, proper dilution, and caution are key when considering natural skincare methods.
