The Siliguri Corridor, famously called the Chicken's Neck, is a narrow stretch of land in West Bengal that connects India’s northeastern states to the rest of the country.
At its narrowest, this corridor is just 17 km wide, making it one of India's most strategically sensitive regions. It shares borders with Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, adding to its geopolitical significance.
Why is it Called the "Chicken's Neck"?
The corridor's slim shape resembles a chicken's neck, making it vulnerable to potential threats. If blocked, it could cut off India’s entire Northeast, making it a crucial passage for security and connectivity.
Why is the Siliguri Corridor Important?
1. It is the only land link between mainland India and the eight northeastern states.
2. A major hub for trade, tourism, and commerce between India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
3. A key rail and road network supports military movement along the India-China border (LAC).
4. The New Jalpaiguri railway station connects directly to important military bases near China.
In short, the Siliguri Corridor is India’s lifeline to the Northeast, making its security and stability a top priority.
