On April 15, 2025, India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a charge sheet in a New Delhi court against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in connection with the National Herald money laundering case. The ED alleges that the Gandhis formed a shell company to illegally acquire assets worth approximately $300 million from Associated Journals Ltd., the publisher of the National Herald newspaper. The charge sheet also names other Congress members.
The Congress party has dismissed the charges as politically motivated. Spokesperson Jairam Ramesh stated, "Filing chargesheets against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and some others is nothing but the politics of vendetta and intimidation by the PM." He emphasized that the party and its leadership will not be silenced.
The ED's investigation began in 2022, during which both Gandhis were questioned. In November 2023, the agency seized assets worth ₹7.52 billion (approximately $87.72 million) linked to the case, including properties in New Delhi and Mumbai. The National Herald, established in 1937 by Jawaharlal Ne ... India's first Prime Minister and Rahul Gandhi's great-grandfather, has long been associated with the Congress party.
On the same day, the ED questioned Robert Vadra, Rahul ... . Vadra dismissed the allegations, suggesting that authorities are misusing their power whenever he considers entering politics or speaks out for minorities.
The developments have intensified the political discourse in India, with the Congress party accusing the ruling government of using investigative agencies to target opposition leaders. The ED has not commented publicly on the charge sheet.
