In Sadri, Rajasthan, the Raika community has been herding camels for generations. But in 2015, camel trading was banned, leaving many families without income. Enter Camel Charisma, a social enterprise started by German veterinarian Dr Ilse Köhler-Rollefson and Rajasthani local Hanwant Singh Rathore.
Camel Charisma helps the Raikas earn money through camel milk and related products. They set up Kumbalgarh Camel Dairy in 2019 and also produce cheese, wool, and paper from camels. Camel milk is nutritious and has health benefits, including helping autistic children and reducing insulin needs in diabetics.
Initially, the Raikas were hesitant because of traditional beliefs and legal restrictions. After years of guidance and the FSSAI’s approval in 2016, they began selling camel milk confidently. Today, herders like Karan earn ₹25,000 per month and can maintain their traditional lifestyle.
By combining modern business methods with the Raikas’ traditional knowledge, Camel Charisma is protecting camels, empowering the community, and creating a sustainable future for both people and animals.
