Why do people keep fast on Maha Shivaratri?

Maha Shivaratri, one of the most important festivals for Hindus, is celebrated with fasting and devotion to Lord Shiva. People fast on this day for several spiritual, cultural, and personal reasons, each adding deeper meaning to the practice.

First and foremost, fasting is seen as a way to purify the mind, body, and soul. Devotees believe that by fasting and meditating on Lord Shiva, they come closer to spiritual growth and liberation. It's not just about abstaining from food; it's about creating a deeper connection with the divine.

Many people also fast to manifest their desires. By combining fasting with prayer and meditation, they believe that Lord Shiva's grace can help fulfill their wishes when the fast is observed with sincerity. It's a time for devotees to reflect, seek blessings, and cleanse themselves of past mistakes.

The practice of fasting teaches self-discipline and control over one's senses- key elements in any spiritual practice. The fasting tradition is also rooted in legends, like Lord Shiva consuming poison to save the world and Goddess Parvati fasting to protect him.

Apart from spiritual reasons, fasting can have health benefits like detoxifying the body and improving digestion. But, of course, it should always be done safely.

In the end, fasting on Maha Shivaratri is a beautiful blend of devotion, discipline, and tradition, helping devotees spiritually grow while celebrating Lord Shiva's divine presence.
