On June 12, Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, tragically crashed just seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad. With 242 people onboard, only one passenger - British‐Indian national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh - survived, amid debris that plummeted into a medical college hostel, tragically claiming additional lives on the ground .
In response, the Indian government has formed an urgent, high‑powered multi‑disciplinary committee headed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan. This panel is tasked with a deep dive into existing SOPs, cockpit data, maintenance logs, ATC communications, and witness reports, with a mandate to deliver findings within three months .
Preliminary investigation hints at possible issues with engine thrust, wing flaps, and landing gear settings - black boxes have been recovered, and international experts from the US, UK, Boeing, and GE Aerospace are aiding the inquiry. DGCA has already ordered immediate safety inspections for Air India’s 787 fleet.
Prime Minister Modi, senior officials, and victims’ families are coordinating with diplomatic missions. Compensation compensation, helplines, and identification efforts are underway alongside a wider review of aviation safety protocols.
