Two days after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, 2025, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed its first peaceful night, according to Defence spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal. No incidents were reported in the union territory during the night of May 11–12, bringing a much-needed calm after days of intense cross-border hostilities.
Cities including Akhnoor, Rajouri, Poonch, Uri, Srinagar, and Jammu began returning to normalcy, alongside regions in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana, which had faced heavy shelling during the conflict. The ceasefire followed India's precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, conducted on May 7 to retaliate against the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
Indian forces had targeted nine terror sites and strategic military positions in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), eliminating over 100 terrorists. Sporadic drone sightings were reported on May 10 but ceased following stern warnings from India. The fragile peace holds, but the region remains on alert.
