Delhi woke up to yet another chilly morning on Wednesday, with the minimum temperature recorded at 7.6 degrees Celsius at 5:30 AM, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city continues to experience dropping temperatures, with Tuesday marking the coldest day in four days at 6.6 degrees Celsius.
As the mercury falls, Delhi's homeless population has sought shelter in night homes set up by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). A total of 235 pagoda tents have been installed across the capital in areas such as AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin Flyover to provide relief from the extreme cold.
Adding to the city's woes, Delhi's air quality has deteriorated into the ‘very poor’ category with an AQI of 327 at 8 AM on Wednesday, as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. Just a day before, Delhi's AQI stood at 258, classified as ‘poor’. The worsening air quality, coupled with the chilly weather, has made conditions harsher for residents.
The Met Department has predicted foggy conditions from January 28 onwards, with temperatures expected to range between 7-11 degrees Celsius. With a toxic smog layer and freezing temperatures, Delhiites must brace for challenging weather conditions in the coming days.
