Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that the Delhi government will approach the Supreme Court seeking permission to lift the ban on green firecrackers during Diwali, subject to strict certification and regulation.
She clarified that only certified green firecrackers, manufactured by authorised institutions and tested by competent bodies, would be allowed if the court grants relief. Gupta emphasised the government’s intention of balancing public sentiment and environmental protection, committing to compliance with all guidelines and court standards.
Under the existing ban, Delhi has prohibited all firecrackers including green ones, in line with Supreme Court directions aiming to curb festive pollution.66Legal experts note that the court has already ruled against relaxing broader firecracker bans in past cases.
If approved, the move could reinstate limited festive celebrations while preserving air quality. However, success depends on rigorous enforcement, clear certification mechanisms, and effective monitoring to prevent misuse and protect public health.
