A new large-scale study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open has found a strong link between early puberty and an increased risk of mental health disorders.
Researchers from University Hospital Essen, Germany, analyzed health data of over 6,500 individuals over 13 years.
They discovered that children with central precocious puberty (CPP) - when puberty begins before age eight in girls and nine in boys - were 50% more likely to develop mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders. Specifically, depression risk was 70% higher, while anxiety disorders increased by 45%.
The study highlights the long-term effects, with elevated rates of depression and ADHD persisting for up to eight years after early puberty onset.
Researchers recommend that caretakers closely monitor children experiencing early puberty for psychiatric symptoms to ensure timely intervention and support.
