Understanding Babies' Skin Sensitivity
Dr. Shah emphasizes that infants' skin is significantly more sensitive than adults', losing moisture up to five times faster. This heightened sensitivity makes them more susceptible to heat-related skin issues during the summer months.
Key Skincare Recommendations
Limit Oil Massages: Traditional oil massages can block underdeveloped sweat glands, leading to prickly heat rashes. If massaging, use a lightweight, non-greasy baby oil free from harmful chemicals, and apply gently in the direction of hair growth to prevent folliculitis.
Optimal Bathing Practices: Bathe babies once or twice daily using lukewarm water. Avoid wipes, which often contain preservatives, and keep baths short—between 5 to 10 minutes—to prevent skin dryness.
Moisturize Promptly: After bathing, gently pat the skin dry and apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer to lock in moisture.
Choose Breathable Clothing: Dress babies in loose-fitting, light-colored cotton garments to facilitate air circulation and reduce the risk of heat rashes.
Ensure Adequate Hydration: Keep babies well-hydrated. For infants under six months, frequent breastfeeding is recommended; older babies should be offered water regularly.
By adhering to these guidelines, parents can help ensure their babies remain comfortable and protected throughout the hot summer season.
