Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, recently expressed his views on the ongoing work-life balance debate. In a video shared by ANI, Adani emphasized that work-life balance is achieved when individuals engage in activities they genuinely enjoy. He added that one should neither impose their definition of work-life balance on others nor accept others' definitions for themselves.
Adani humorously remarked, "Biwi chor ke bhag jayegi" (your wife will run away), underscoring the importance of maintaining a balance. He further elaborated that if a person spends more than eight hours at work, it could strain personal relationships, especially with one's spouse.
Adani’s comments come shortly after Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy reignited the debate by advocating for a 70-hour work week. Murthy recently urged young Indians to adopt a rigorous work ethic to accelerate the nation’s development. He initially proposed the idea in 2023, suggesting extended work hours as a means to drive India's economic growth.
While Murthy’s stance has sparked discussions about the necessity of hard work for national progress, Adani’s remarks highlight the challenges of excessive work hours on personal relationships and well-being. The contrasting perspectives of these two influential figures offer a nuanced view of the ongoing discourse on work-life balance and its implications for individuals and society.
